Amal Express, a leading money transfer was founded as a money transfer business when the founders came together to amalgamate their respective hawala businesses back in 1997.The company provides money transfer services to the Somali community which by then was limited in reach and agent network. In 1999, it moved its headquarters from Nairobi (Kenya) to (UAE).
Amal Express have built an expanded global network of partner banks and financial institutions which enabled over 3 million
customers to make payment to over 800 locations via the service of 700 agents physically and digitally available in over 50
countries.
All business agents, branches and affiliates of the Amal Express are legally registered and licensed by the local regulatory authorities and have extensive operations in most countries they operate in, including the USA, Canada, Europe.
Our Story
Amal Express was founded as a money transfer business when the founders came together to amalgamate their respective hawala businesses back in 1997.The company providing money transfer services to the Somali community then was limited in reach and agent network. In 1999, it moved its headquarters from Nairobi (Kenya) to (UAE) for security and tax reasons. Since moving its headquarters, various changes were affected, including accounts keeping, electronic communication etc. During 2000-2003, some of the original founding members split away from the company to establish their own money transfer operations, reducing to the current seven founding members who have shared common beliefs, understanding and objectives.
The executive management system was then introduced, and regional offices were established as business volumes began to grow. Agents were also turned to commission basis and some smaller hawala businesses were acquired. With further volume growth in money transfers, the company moved to introduce online money transfer program and compliance.
The founders of Amal Express succeeded in establishing solid financial and management base within Somalia and internationally, putting the company in the lead of money transfer business operations. The company has seen dramatic increase in turnover, capital, assets, and customers following years, and this has strengthened Amal’s reputation in the market it serves. The founders’ unity and strong values upon which the business is based have contributed to a highly trusted Amal name.
The money transfer business has become a successful product for Amal and seen rapid growth However, profits and return on capital have not increased to that extent as overheads have increased and operation have continued. With the growth and strong reputation of the company, the Board has been encouraged to diversify its business operations and seek new opportunities, particularly as funding is readily available.
